Consultant - UX research for iDiaspora
Project Context and Scope
The iDiaspora platform is a global engagement and knowledge hub for diaspora organizations and leadersl. The platform is a community driven digital space designed to empower diaspora engagement and transnational communities. iDiaspora allows users including diaspora leaders, organizations, practitioners, experts, businesses, and governments, to connect with one another and share their opinions, ideas, experiences, and best practices in order to contribute to sustainable positive change and maximize the impact of diaspora as empowered development actors.
The platform includes multiple functionalities where users can connect, learn and contribute by 1) sharing their experiences through blogs and videos, 2) sharing job or volunteer opportunities and their projects, 3) organizing events, 4) exchanging best practices and advice in forums, 5) taking online courses and trainings and 6) exploring the community and connecting with each other.
iDiaspora was initially launched in 2018 and, in November 2020, an updated version of the website was launched. The new version was designed taking into consideration feedback from users and partners and includes innovative features to enhance the dialogue and connectivity among its users. Today, we would like to better understand our users’ experience (UX) in order to maximise the usefulness of the platform. In this context, the consultant(s) should:
1. Measure and analyse user activity on the platform.
2. Provide insights into how its design can be adapted to meet the current or changing needs of end users.
3. Collect and analyse qualitative data from users to identify users’ behaviour and needs.
4. Provide strategic tactics and guidelines to improve the platform's ease of use and overall user flow, and
5. Provide advice on how to improve the content and user experience to increase the usability and optimize the functions and content of the platform.
6. Provide advice on how to leverage existing platforms (e.g., social media platforms) to maximize engagement in the iDiaspora platform.
The consultant(s) provides a clear analysis of the data of the platform, identifies relevant trends and provides recommendations on how to maximise the use and outreach of the platform. The consultant(s) analyse the user experience of the platform and provides specific recommendations on how to display and make the platforms more engaging and attractive to users. The consultant(s) will have access to the analytics of the platform and IOM staff will support them with the identification of diaspora members to conduct the usability tests.
Organizational Department / Unit to which the Consultant is contributing:
Under the guidance of IOM’s HQ and relevant thematic specialists, the contractor will take the responsibility to conduct a thorough UX analysis of the iDiaspora platform (quantitative and qualitative).
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
Tasks to be performed under this contract
a. Conduct a data analysis from the data of the platform and social media including number of visits and demographics, including the extraction of patters and identify relevant trends.
b. Provide clear advice on how to maximize visits and how to present content in a simple and engaging way.
c. Identify the main needs of iDiaspora users. Provide advice on how to display next content and functionalities to make the platform dynamic and attractive for target users.
d. Conduct full usability tests of the platform with users, including interfaces for generating content, identifying, and contacting other community members, and managing account information as well as elements of gamification, with actual audiences in four different regions (Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia).
e. Generate specific recommendations and line of actions to address identified gaps and opportunities to boost the usability and registrations of the platform.
f. Generate specific recommendations on how to leverage on existing social media platforms to maximise engagement in iDiaspora.
Performance indicators for evaluation of results
a. Outline of the methodology of the project – 10%
b. Analysis report of usability tests with diaspora members of the platform – 30%
c. Final Report – including analysis of the collected data, analytics, and recommendations. The final product should include full anonymized data and editable files of wireframes - 60%
Delivery Schedule
1. Outline of the methodology : Outline of the methodology of the project (3 days)
2. Analysis report of usability test : Usability test with diaspora members of the platform (12 days)
3. Final report of the study : Final Report - including analysis of the collected data, analytics and recommendations. The final product should include full anonymized data and editable files of wireframes (3 days)
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education, experience and/or skills required
• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Interaction Design or equivalent design-related field from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience; or
• University degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of knowledge of and experience working UX design and/or applied product research.
Experience
• Ability to create a research plan, including logical formulation of a research hypothesis;
• Experience with a range of qualitative methods including but not limited to interviews, contextual inquiry, concept testing, and diary studies;
• Experience conducting detailed user research and working closely with users and stakeholders to gather requirements;
• Experience creating wireframes
Skills
• Good understanding of UX principles and Google Analytics;
• Good understanding of Frontend architecture patterns;
• Good problem-solving skills with attention to detail;
• Fluent in speaking, writing, and reading English;
• Experience with data visualization would be an advantage. Languages IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

• The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.
