Launch of an international money transfer system for the Burundian Diaspora on 24 November 2018 in Brussels

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the National Postal Service (RNP Burundi) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU), conscious of the close links between migration, financial inclusion and development, launched a project using different components of the postal sector to assist Burundi's diaspora, their families and communities in rural parts of the country, reduce remittance transfer costs and increase financial literacy. To that end, the project has been operating a domestic money transfer system in Burundi called “Rungika” since June 2017[1]. After more than 15 months of implementation, the project is expanding its portfolio through the launch of an international corridor. In collaboration with RIA Money Transfer (Euronet Worldwide Inc.), this new corridor will allow Burundian diaspora to send money at a fair rate worldwide to their beneficiaries to be paid by “Rungika” in Burundi. One of the aims of the project is to contribute to SDG 10 Target 10C which aims to reduce the transaction costs of remittances. The launch is scheduled for the 24 November 2018 in Brussels.
