Mapping of Sierra Leonean Health Professionals : in the United Kingdom, Germany, United States of America and Canada

Between September 2012 and October 2013, the IOM commissioned three separate mapping studies of Sierra Leonean diaspora health professionals in United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, and Germany, respectively. The United Kingdom and the United States are the two most prominent destination choices for Sub-Saharan African health professionals, and moreover share the largest pools of Sierra Leonean health-care professionals in diaspora. In Canada and Germany there was a considerably smaller pool to draw from.

International Dialogue on Migration N°22 - Diasporas and Development: Bridging Societies and States

The Diaspora Ministerial Conference held on 18–19 June 2013 is a landmark in the history of the global debate on migration and development. Amid the flurry of international events leading up to the 2nd United Nations High Level Dialogue (HLD) on International Migration and Development in October 2013, the diaspora conference marks the first and only gathering of high-level politicians from all parts of the world responsible for diaspora and their engagement in the development of their countries of origin.

Facilitating Diaspora Investment in Kosovo: Assemsnet and Mapping of Innovative Strategies at Central and Local Level

Although no official data exists on the level of diaspora investments in Kosovo it is considered that their engagement is low given their potential and willingness to invest and save. This research aims to identify concrete strategies for facilitating investment by collecting primary data through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with existing and potential diaspora investors and relevant stakeholders. Initially the report discusses the business environment and reforms undertaken by Kosovo government to induce investments.

The objective of this research project was to conduct a feasibility study on attracting diaspora investors by offering to them investment opportunities on economic zones. In addition, the option to invest on local level economic zones through PPP initiatives was also researched and evaluated.

Feasibility Study on Private Investment Fund for Diaspora Investors

This study explores the possibility of establishing a diaspora-targeted Investment Fund for investment opportunities in the private sector of Kosovo. The study offers the most suitable model and investment strategy for such a Fund based on consultations with diaspora members and takes into considerations the limitations and risks of the business environment in Kosovo.

Feasibility Study on Diaspora Investment on Municipal Bonds

The objective of this exploratory research project was to evaluate and study the feasibility of offering municipal bonds to the Kosovar diaspora. In order to address the objective, the main exploratory research techniques applied were focus groups and one-on-one in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders such as businesses, business support organizations, governmental (central and local level) and non-governmental institutions, members of the Kosovar diaspora, and international organizations operating in Kosovo.

International Dialogue on Migration N°22 - Diasporas and Development: Bridging Societies and States

This first IOM high-level dialogue on diasporas was an experiment. 55 ministers and minister-level officials from all parts of the world sat together for two days and discussed issues on the growing global diaspora and the contributions they bring to development. Participants were able to exchange views on how to strengthen political and institutional commitment as a basis for designing and implementing policies and programmes of diaspora engagement relevant to their countries’ respective circumstances and needs.
