The National Water Affairs Regulation Authority (NAWAR) formerly known as the Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW) was established in early 2020 based on presidential decree whose mandate is to manage and control water resources, establish and improve water resources infrastructures, provide maintenance and service to existing water resources structures in the country.
In accordance with the Water Law, NWARA is responsible for the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), feasibility studies, technical surveys, design, supervision and construction of all hydraulic structures including dams, main canals, intakes, drains, canal linings and rivers embankments across the country. At the same time, using the principles of IWRM, the establishment of water resources management institutions and geographical divisions of the country into five (5) main River Basins (RBs) and 35 sub RBs, maintenance of new structures and facilities including traditional systems, are the main tasks of this authority.
Water resources are developed and managed through the IWRM approach in the country in such a way that sustainable economic and social development is achieved through continuous use of water resources, improved living standards, reduced poverty and safe water for present and future generations of the country is guaranteed.
